This month’s evening meeting will take place on Tuesday 14th February, at 7.30 p.m. in the Carnarvon Room.

John Taylor will speak to us about “The Nine Dukes” (Portland).

As usual, new members and visitors are welcome to join us. (Visitors £2)

Our Open Morning on Saturday 18th February will be a “Winter Warmer” – Hot Soup & History. Come & enjoy soup, tea/coffee along with old photos, family history resources, maps, archives and our current exhibition on “Village Societies”. As usual in the Carnarvon Room from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Courage of the Small Hours – a story from World War 2.

At our next evening meeting, on Tuesday 10th January, Lady Helen Nall will tell the story of 2 Lancaster bombers which crashed near Hoveringham in 1945. Her talk is entitled “The Courage of the Small Hours”. The meeting will take place as usual in the Carnarvon Room at 7.30 p.m. . New members and visitors are welcome (Visitors £2).

Our next Open Morning will take place on Saturday 14th January, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., again in the Carnarvon Room. Our current exhibition on Village Societies will be on view, and there will be an opportunity to consult our local history resources. Entrance, including tea/coffee £1.50. All welcome.

Below are some photographs of a memorial to another Lancaster bomber crew, who lost their lives when their plane crashed in 1943 near Staunton-in-the-Vale. As well as the memorial in the churchyard, a panel has recently been erected at the churchyard entrance, giving further information.

December: AGM, Christmas Party & Fayre

This year’s A.G.M. will take place at 7.30 p.m. on Tuesday 13th December in the Carnarvon Room, and will be followed by our Christmas Party, with entertaining contributions from members.

Our December Open Morning, on Saturday 17th, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Carnarvon Room, will be a Christmas Fayre, including a tombola, book stall, cakes & bric-a-brac. The current exhibition on Village Societies will also be on show.

All welcome. Admission £1.50 including coffee/tea and mince pie.

November Meetings – Wollaton Hall, Fish & Chips, and a Quiz

Our next evening meeting will take place on Tuesday 8th November at 7.30 p.m. in the Carnarvon Room. The speaker will be Tim Preston, who will talk about “Wollaton Hall and Park”.

Visitors are very welcome (Admission £2). New members may enrol at the meeting, for the annual fee of £10, which covers admission to the whole 2011-2012 season of evening meetings.

On the evening of Friday 11th November, we are holding a Members Fish & Chip Supper and Quiz in the Carnarvon Room. Details from the Secretary.

Odd Laws of Old England

Our speaker will be Lily Dawes, who will talk about “Odd Laws of Old England”.

New Season – New Exhibition

Our 2011 – 2012 season of evening meetings begins on Tuesday 13th September, at 7.30 p.m. in the Carnarvon Room, when Gareth King will talk about “Life, Death and Fashion in Anglo-Saxon England”.

As usual, visitors are welcome (£2 per meeting). New members are also welcome to join at the meeting, and the annual subscription (£10) covers entry to all the talks in the season.

The next Open Morning will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday 17th September, again in the Carnarvon Room. This will see the launch of our new exhibition, entitled “Village Societies”, which features photographs and other archive materials charting the history of various local organisations including the W.I. and the Horticultural Society. Entrance fee £1.50, including Tea/Coffee & Biscuits.

Victorian Jewellery

Our final evening meeting of the 2010 – 11 programme will take place on Tuesday 10th May, at 7.30 p.m. in the Carnarvon Room.

The speaker will be Andrew Bates, who will talk to us about Victorian Jewellery.

April Open Morning

“Spinster of No Occupation” (Mary Ellen Shaw)

Our next evening meeting will take place on Tuesday 12th April, at 7.30 p.m. in the Carnarvon Room.

The speaker will be Dr. Rowena Edlin-White, who will talk to us about Mary Ellen Shaw, who, when she died in Nottingham in 1926, was described on her death certificate as a “Spinster of No Occupation”.

Mary Ellen Shaw (1859 – 1926) devoted her life to alleviating poverty and disease in Nottingham. As well as working as a teacher, she ran Girls’ Evening Homes, Mother & Baby Guilds and Sunday School classes for ragged pupils as well as visiting prisons, hospitals and workhouse wards. She is best remembered for her Men’s Bible Class which, with the backing of the Duchess of Portland, offered support to hundreds of working men.
